Starting a new lawn care or landscaping project is the fun part. But imagine it’s a sunny Saturday morning and you’re at the bustling supply yard, dust clinging to your shoes. You stand among pallets of material, staring around feeling slightly overwhelmed. “Do I need 2 yards… or 6?” echoes in your mind. You take a deep breath, make a guess, and it goes one of two ways:

We know starting a project can feel stressful. After working on many jobs in Houston, we’ve seen how common it is to worry about having the right materials or the right amount. Our goal is to help our Houston neighbors feel confident, not anxious. That’s why we created a free, easy-to-use Material Estimator. It helps you plan better, avoid waste, and feel sure before you spend any money.

Check out our blog guide to learn why planning and measuring are important for your project, and how to use our calculator. When you’re ready, you can try the estimator here: Material Estimator

Quick note: Just so you know, we’ve recently updated the estimator and calculator page using what we’ve learned from real jobs. Now it’s faster, easier to understand, and more accurate for our Houston community.

Why We Created This Free Tool

When you work outside, you soon realize that measurements, depth, and coverage are key. Mulch is a lot like cake icing: the thicker it is, the better it covers. If the layer is too thin, it won’t protect your garden, just like icing that doesn’t fully cover a cake. But if you spread it too thick, it can be too much. Our estimator uses the same math we rely on for mulch refreshes, bed installs, top-offs, and sod projects, but it’s made simple so anyone can use it.

We invest time and money to keep this tool updated, but we’re happy to offer it free as a small way to support the Houston community that supports us. If you ever want a second opinion or need help with delivery and installation, we’re here. No pressure—just a free resource for our neighbors.

Quick tip: Most material yards sell bulk product by the cubic yard (volume) or by the ton (weight). Those aren’t the same thing — especially with rock/gravel. That’s why our estimator focuses on cubic yards and helps you add a buffer so you don’t come up short.

Now, with that said lets get into it!

Why Getting Material Estimates Right Matters

It’s not just about saving money (though that’s always a bonus). Accurate material estimates help your projects look better and last longer. Here’s why:

Save Money and Avoid Waste – Buying too much wastes materials and money. Buying too little causes delays and extra trips.
Professional, Even Coverage – Whether it’s mulch, sod, or gravel, the right amount gives you clean, consistent coverage for a sharper, healthier yard.
Less Stress, More Progress – When you know exactly what you need, the project moves faster with fewer headaches along the way.

How You Can Use Our Free Material Estimator

Our Material Estimator was built to be quick, simple, and accurate—no guesswork. Just plug in your measurements, choose your material, and let the calculator do the math for you.

It’s great for projects like:

In a few clicks, you’ll get a solid estimate so you can buy the right amount the first time—saving time, money, and extra trips.

If you’re installing sod in Houston’s heat, make sure you’re watering correctly from day one. We also recommend checking Texas A&M guidance for Texas lawn care tips.

Why Sod Coverage Estimates Matter

Most sod suppliers advertise that one pallet covers about 450 sq. ft. That’s a helpful baseline—but in the real world, coverage often ends up lower once the job starts. That’s why our Material Estimator uses a more realistic option to account for “waste”.

Here’s why that matters:

Bottom line: planning for realistic coverage helps you avoid coming up short mid-project. Use the Material Estimator for a confident starting point—then if you want a quick sanity check, give us a call. No pressure—just friendly advice.

How to Measure Your Yard or Garden Accurately

To get the most accurate results with our calculator, follow these quick tips:

  • Measure Length & Width: Use a tape measure or measuring wheel to get the length and width in feet.

  • Break Down Odd Shapes: For irregular spaces, split them into smaller sections (rectangles or circles) and measure each separately.

  • Account for Depth: For mulch, soil, or gravel, decide your layer depth before you calculate (mulch is usually 2–3″).

  • Double-Check Measurements: Recheck your numbers so you don’t overbuy or come up short.

How to use the estimator (takes 60 seconds)

  1. Measure length × width (feet). If the area is odd-shaped, split it into rectangles and add them up.

  2. Choose your material + depth (and waste %).

  3. Click Calculate Material and get your totals instantly.

Real Stories, Real Results | Work Smart not Hard

“I’ve been using Evergreen Outdoor Services every couple of years to top-dress my lawn. I don’t own a truck and wasn’t sure where to find high-quality materials at a fair price. Jorge and his team not only delivered the best materials, but even with delivery costs, it was about the same as what I’d pay at a big-box store. Plus, I didn’t have to haul anything myself. The convenience and quality made it worth it.”
Mr. Hunter, Houston, TX

We work closely with trusted suppliers to secure the best materials at competitive prices. Even after adding delivery costs, our pricing often matches—or beats—what you’d pay at retail. Plus, you get the added convenience of materials delivered straight to your doorstep without worrying about fuel, time, or wear and tear on your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What if I have leftover materials?
Leftover mulch or gravel can be stored in a dry, covered area for future use. Extra sod, however, should be used within a day or two, as it can dry out quickly. If you end up with more than expected, consider patching bare spots or sharing with neighbors.

2. Why does your sod calculator estimate less coverage than suppliers claim?
Most suppliers advertise 450 sq. ft. per pallet, but we’ve adjusted our calculator to 425 sq. ft. to account for damaged pieces and the extra cutting required for irregularly shaped lawns. This gives you a more accurate and realistic estimate.

3. How deep should I spread mulch or gravel?
For mulch, 2-3 inches is ideal to retain moisture and suppress weeds. For gravel, 2-4 inches is typical depending on its use (e.g., pathways vs. drainage).

4. Can I mix different materials in the same project?
Absolutely! For example, you can use gravel for pathways and mulch for garden beds. Our calculator lets you estimate different materials separately to keep things simple.

5. What if I’m still unsure about my measurements?
If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’re happy to walk you through the process, and there’s no obligation to book a service. We’re here to help!
